Choose The Right Fuel For Fire Feature

A fire feature is the perfect way to spice up the backyard with some attractive character and a warm ambience. The radiant blaze can emerge from a fire pit, fire bowl or a convenient fire table. Even as you contemplate roasting marshmallows and enjoying the heat of the fire as it reflects from the fire pit glass stones, you have to consider the type of fuel that will spark the fire as well.

And the options are:

Wood – Wood forms the traditional form of getting a fire going and gives the feel of an authentic campsite. It brings the hiss, crackle and smoke of a real fire that is missing in all other fuel sources. However, this charm spells added chores like collecting, chopping and storing the firewood. You have to be particularly careful of the flying embers and using a smoke screen is a must on a wood burning fire feature. The cinders and other residue can mess up the backyard too. Moreover, many city ordinances restrict wood burning fires and there may be objections from neighbors as well.

Gel – Gel fuel logs have emerged as a handy alternative to wood. These faux logs give the look of real wood without any embers, ash or smoke. The best part is that they are eco-friendly. However, the heat output is markedly lower. Moreover, gel fuel logs are not easily available everywhere.

Natural gas – This is by far considered the best fuel option for outdoor fire features. All you have to do is connect the fire feature to your natural gas line and the fire can get going with the flip of a switch. Apart from the obvious convenience, there is no messy residue, smoke or other maintenance issues. Therefore, you can add some colorful fire pit glass stones to further enhance the beauty of the fire.

Yet, as gas is easy on the pocket, you don’t have to worry about the fuel running out either. However, installing a gas line if you don’t have one already can prove to be cost-prohibitive. And once installed, the fire feature becomes fixed and cannot be moved around as you wish.

Propane – If you are looking for an eco-friendly yet portable fire option, the answer lies in propane fuel. It carries the same benefits of natural gas without having to dig up an existing backyard for a new gas line. However, propane can be expensive and you will also be charged with refilling the propane tank as and when needed. You even have to consider where to place and how to conceal the tank and hose used for the fire feature.

In sum, weigh in the maintenance requirements, the convenience you require and the regulations in your area to decide on the best fuel option to get the most from your fire feature.
