Natural Gas or Propane for Gas Fire Features

Gas fire bowls, tables and pits have emerged as a popular option for heating up the backyard or patio. They win over wood burning options in terms of ease of use, safety and maintenance. However, a gas fire pit burner again throws up the option of using natural gas or liquid propane as fuel for the fire.

Generally speaking, both fuel options are considered equal as they tend to burn clean without any harmful emissions and are functionally quite similar when it comes to creating a dazzling flame in the fire feature. Yet, some significant differences do pop up in the form of connection, portability, output and cost.

For instance, most homes already have a gas line and prefer the natural gas fire pits or bowls. But they still need to engage a certified gas installer to hook the fire feature to the gas line. This will make the fire pit or table a permanent fixture as it cannot be moved from one place to another. Yet, as the gas supply is constant, there is no peril of running out of natural gas!

On the other hand, propane is available in tanks and there is no need to spend extra on installation services. Simply connect to the tank and the fire is good to go. Concealing the propane tank and pipe can be an issue, but most fire pits and tables contain a closed compartment for storing the tank. This way the fire feature can easily be moved around in the yard or even shifted indoors when needed. Then again, the supply is limited to the tank contents and you will have to store replacement tanks or rush to the store for a refill when the propane runs out in the middle of a party!

It is worth noting that natural gas works out to be significantly cheaper than the liquid propane alternative. The burners and other fittings for both fuel sources are markedly different and propane burning gas fire tables, bowls or pits are usually priced more than natural gas ones. However, propane fire features turn out to be more efficient as it offers approximately 2.5 times more usable energy per cubic foot that natural gas does. Yet, it is believed that natural gas burns cleaner than its tanked counterpart.

Some people even consider that propane produces a brighter flame than natural gas and will be visible in the day as well!
